As a Boston newborn and family photographer, I often photograph babies within their first two weeks of life. But when baby Josiah came into my studio at one month old, I knew it would be a beautiful and slightly different session—one filled with alert expressions, soft snuggles, and a very stylish family of three.
Whenever I welcome a family into my studio, I always begin with the family portraits first. This gives everyone a chance to feel comfortable, ensures that hair and makeup are fresh, and allows the option for a partner to head out to work once their part is complete. After that, the focus shifts entirely to the newborn—often giving parents time to relax, write thank-you notes, catch up on a book, or even nap on the comfy couch while I work quietly and efficiently with their baby.
For Josiah’s session, his mom selected a beautiful, earthy palette of brown, grey, and navy blue. These tones worked perfectly for creating consistent, timeless portraits while still offering plenty of variety in texture and posing. I carried those colors throughout every setup to ensure the entire gallery would display beautifully together, whether hung on the walls of their Boston home or printed in a custom album.
The session included a full range of imagery: mom with her baby boy, dad holding his son, and of course, several heartfelt images of the entire family together. Each photo captured the love, newness, and deep connection between them—moments that pass by all too quickly during the early weeks of parenthood.
Although Josiah was older than most of my newborn clients, the session went smoothly. At one month old, babies tend to have more developed features and increased wakefulness. He did have some typical baby acne, which is very common at this stage, but thanks to my professional retouching, his final portraits show nothing but soft, clear skin and gentle newborn charm.
Every aspect of my sessions is tailored to the individual family, from color choices and posing guidance to professional editing that ensures each final image is gallery-worthy. The studio space is calm, warm, and designed to help parents feel at home while I take care of all the details.
If you're considering newborn photography in Boston and your baby is already past the two-week mark, don't worry—it’s absolutely possible to create stunning, memorable portraits even at three or four weeks old. Every baby is unique, and there’s no “wrong” time to document these early days.
