We’ve all seen it. That stiff, too-wide, “I’d-rather-be-anywhere-else” grin that sneaks into family portraits. Whether it’s a tired toddler, a camera-shy teen, or even a nervous parent, fake smiles can happen to the best of us. But don’t worry. As a Boston family photographer with years of experience capturing everything from newborn yawns to toddler giggles, I’m here to help you ditch the forced smiles and keep things genuinely joyful during your photography session.
First, let’s talk comfort. When clients walk into our Boston photography studio, we want everyone to feel relaxed, not like they’re stepping onto a game show stage. A comfortable environment is key. Whether you're here for a maternity session, a newborn shoot, or a full family portrait, we take the time to connect with everyone, including the littlest ones. Babies can sense stress, and honestly, so can adults. The more relaxed the room, the more natural the smiles.
Second, ditch the “say cheese.” It doesn’t work. You’ll either get a grimace or that frozen face everyone regrets later. Instead, we guide families through simple prompts and natural interactions. Snuggle your newborn, whisper something silly to your toddler, or just focus on each other rather than the camera. Real moments create real smiles, and those are the portraits you’ll treasure.
For babies older than 6 months, one tactic consistently works like magic: genuine play. Whether it’s a game of peek-a-boo, singing a favorite song, or letting your baby bounce in your lap, engaging in real, loving interaction brings out the best expressions. These babies are smart—they know when you're performing and when you're being real. So be real. Laugh, play, be goofy. It works.
Another trick is timing. Trying to capture the perfect baby portrait during naptime? Probably not going to end well. For every photography session, we work around your family’s natural rhythm. That means planning the session when your baby is happiest and making sure there are snacks nearby for kids and coffee within reach for parents.
And don’t underestimate the power of a silly photographer. We’ll make funny noises, dance around the studio, and do just about anything short of juggling to get a real smile. (Although if juggling is what it takes, we’re willing to try.)
