Where To Display Finished Newborn, Child, and Family Portraits In Your Home

After 25 years of photographing newborns, toddlers, and growing families across the Boston area, I can confidently say this: your portraits deserve more than a spot on your phone or buried in a social media feed. These are heirloom-quality images, celebrating your family’s most fleeting and beautiful stages—especially in those early years. The best way to honor these memories is by displaying them proudly in your home.

Here are some of my favorite spots in a house to showcase finished newborn, child, and family portraits. Many of these ideas come from my own studio clients, who return year after year to update their walls with new moments.

1. The Nursery – A Soft, Sentimental Beginning

There’s something so special about walking into your baby’s room and seeing a beautifully framed portrait of them in their first days. Whether it’s a peaceful sleeping pose or a detailed macro image of their tiny fingers and toes, the nursery is the perfect starting point. I often design subtle, neutral-toned portraits for this space—images that complement the gentle atmosphere of a baby’s room. Canvas wraps or floating frames work beautifully here.

2. Living Room or Family Room – The Heart of the Home

These communal areas are where families gather, laugh, and make memories. Displaying your family portraits here makes them a part of the everyday experience. Consider creating a gallery wall above the sofa or fireplace that evolves over time. Start with a newborn session, then add milestones—first steps, birthdays, holiday portraits. A mix of frame sizes and orientations keeps it dynamic and personal.

3. Up the Staircase – A Timeless Photo Journey

A staircase gallery is one of my favorite ways to tell your family’s story. I encourage clients to display images in chronological order—starting from the bottom with maternity or newborn photos and progressing upward with each new year. The beauty of this layout is that it becomes a walk down memory lane every time you move between floors. Black and white prints work wonderfully here for a cohesive, elegant look.

4. Bathrooms – Yes, Really!

This might sound unconventional, but bathrooms—especially kids’ bathrooms—are perfect for playful, joy-filled images. One of my most popular sets takes place for the a six-month-old “tub time” shoot, where your little one splashes around in a vintage baby bath or bubbles. These fun, light-hearted portraits are ideal for brightening up a powder room or hallway bathroom. 

5. Hallways and Entryways – Daily Reminders of What Matters Most

Imagine walking in your front door and being greeted by the smiling faces of your loved ones. Entryways and hallways often get overlooked, but they’re high-traffic spaces that deserve meaningful decor. A large statement piece or a trio of portraits here can be both welcoming and impactful.
