There's something truly magical about photographing a one-year-old. That fleeting moment between baby and toddler is filled with curiosity, wonder, and emotion, which is exactly what made my recent portrait session with little Aarya such a joy to capture.
Aarya and her family, from nearby Westwood, MA, joined me at a lovely park just a block from my Norwood studio. They came dressed in a palette of vibrant, joyful colors—sunny yellows, soft pinks, and playful patterns that perfectly reflected the cheerful spirit they hoped to capture. It was the kind of color story that immediately tells you this is a family that celebrates life's happiest moments with heart and style.
At first, Aarya was a bit hesitant. Understandably so. A new face with a camera can be overwhelming for anyone, especially a little one still learning the world. But over the years, I've learned a few tricks to help even the shyest toddlers open up, and that day, bubbles were the secret ingredient.
With the first wave of shimmering bubbles floating through the air, something shifted. Aarya's wide eyes sparkled, and slowly her smile began to bloom. She reached up, laughed, and chased the bubbles with that pure, unfiltered joy only a one-year-old can express. Her energy lit up the session, and the camera adored her.
Some of my favorite images from the day show Aarya mid-giggle, arms outstretched, face full of wonder. Others capture quieter, tender moments such as her holding tightly to Mom’s hand or resting against Dad’s shoulder. That balance of vibrant playfulness and quiet connection is what makes sessions like these so special.
It’s always such an honor to be invited into a family’s story, especially at a milestone as sweet and meaningful as a first birthday. Aarya is clearly surrounded by so much love, and I feel lucky to have had the chance to help preserve a few of these precious moments.
To the wonderful families across the Boston area, including places like Westwood, Norwood, and beyond, thank you for trusting me with your memories. And to Aarya, thank you for sharing your beautiful spirit with my lens. May this year be full of even more color, light, and laughter.
