After over 26 years behind the lens capturing life’s most tender beginnings, I’ve seen countless trends come and go in the world of professional newborn photography. But here in 2025, something incredibly meaningful is happening - a return to the details. As a Boston- based newborn and family photographer, I’ve been moved to see how today’s parents are leaning into emotional storytelling and asking for more than just beautifully composed portraits. They want connection, intimacy, and authenticity.
This year, the most requested shots aren't necessarily the perfectly posed newborn in a basket or wrapped in a neutral-toned swaddle— though we still love those timeless setups. What clients are craving now are the quiet, fleeting details: the tiny wrinkles on a newborn’s back, the curling of baby toes, the delicate swirl of hair at the crown of the head, the soft pucker of lips mid-dream. These close-ups, these whispered moments of new life, tell a story in a way no prop or backdrop ever could.
I’ve always believed details are everything but now, more than ever, parents are echoing that sentiment. They want the full story of their baby told- fingers grasping mama’s hand, dad’s nose touching baby’s temple, siblings looking on with awe. I’m often asked to zoom in on the tiny fingernails or to capture the peaceful moment when a newborn rests on a parent’s chest. It’s these micro- emotions that, years from now, will bring tears to the eyes and warmth to the heart.
While most families opt to come to my boutique Norwood studio(carefully designed for the safety of newborns and the comfort of exhausted new parents)I also offer the service of creating the same style of imagery in the comfort of clients’ homes. Whether in my serene studio or in your living room, my goal is always the same: to make everyone feel relaxed, cared for, and seen.
Another growing trend in2025 is the inclusion of older siblings and even family pets in newborn sessions. These additions add a natural, unscripted element to the experience. A big brother gently holding his new sister, or a family dog curled protectively at a newborn’s feet—these are moments full of authenticity and connection. Including the whole family helps everyone feel part of the process and creates imagery that reflects the real, messy, beautiful beginning of life as a bigger family unit.
There’s also a shift toward more documentary- style photography within the newborn space. While studio lights and props still have their place, families are increasingly choosing lifestyle sessions in their homes, where they can relax and be themselves. That environment allows me to capture the emotional layers—the joyful chaos, the loving glances between partners, the unspoken bond between a parent and their new baby.
As photographers, it’s our job not just to take photos, but to preserve feelings. In 2025, clients aren’t asking for perfection—they’re asking for honesty. They want to look at their gallery and remember the way their baby’s hair curled against their fingers or the soft coos that filled the room.
For me, this trend feels like coming home. After decades in the field, I’m honored to be trusted with these sacred details and to help families remember not just what their babies looked like—but how it felt to hold them for the very first time.
