Help! My Toddler’s a Mini Diva: 7 Hilarious Ways to Survive Your Family Photo Shoot

Let’s be honest—toddlers are adorable, unpredictable bundles of energy with very strong opinions. I’ve spent over 25 years photographing families around the Boston area, and I’ve seen it all—from meltdowns over the color of socks to spontaneous dance parties mid-shoot. If your toddler turns into a tiny diva the moment the camera comes out, don’t worry. You’re not alone—and I’ve got some survival strategies (with a side of humor) to help you not just make it through your family photo session, but actually enjoy it.
Here are 7 hilarious, tried-and-true ways to survive your family photo shoot with a toddler who runs the show:
1. Embrace the Chaos
You may arrive with Pinterest-perfect dreams, but toddlers arrive with snacks in their hair and a refusal to wear shoes. Let go of perfection and embrace the moment. Some of my favorite photos are when kids are doing their own thing—running, twirling, or giving me their best “no pictures, please” face. It's all part of the story.
2. Bribery is Not a Dirty Word
Call it "positive reinforcement" if it makes you feel better, but snacks and small rewards work. Mini marshmallows, goldfish crackers, stickers—whatever your child loves (and won’t stain their outfit). Pro tip: Don’t bring chocolate. I learned this lesson during the Great M&M Meltdown of 2014.
3. Timing is Everything
Skip nap time before the shoot at your own risk. The golden hour may sound dreamy, but a tired toddler at 6:30 p.m. is a ticking time bomb. When we schedule sessions, I always ask about your child’s happiest time of day. A well-rested toddler is 90% more likely to cooperate. (Yes, I made up that stat, but trust me—it’s true.)
4. The Outfit Doesn’t Matter as Much as You Think
Yes, matching neutrals and flowy dresses photograph beautifully—but your toddler may only want to wear their dinosaur costume or rainbow tutu. If that happens, take a deep breath. Some of the most memorable images I’ve captured feature sparkly unicorn boots and a Batman cape. Personality always wins.
5. Make Me the Bad Guy
I’ve got thick skin and silly faces for days. Let me be the one asking them to sit still or smile. Your job? Just relax and look loving. When parents stress, kids feel it. Trust me—if they’re ignoring you and making monster sounds, I’m getting pure gold through my lens.
6. Let’s Play a Game
Peekaboo, “Simon Says,” jumping contests—photoshoots aren’t about posing anymore. They’re about play. I come armed with tricks to keep things light and fun. If your toddler thinks we’re just having a goofy good time, we win. Plus, laughter is very photogenic.
7. Remember the Why
This stage—messy, loud, and wild as it is—doesn’t last forever. You’re not just capturing smiles; you’re preserving memories. One day, you’ll look back at the photo where your toddler is sticking their tongue out and think, “That was soher.” These imperfect moments? They’re the ones you’ll treasure most.
So, if your little one decides they’re the Beyoncé of your family photo shoot, don’t panic. I’ve worked with hundreds of mini divas and junior comedians across Boston, from Back Bay to Brookline. Together, we’ll turn the chaos into keepsakes—and have some laughs along the way.
