From Weddings to Newborns: How Alternate Angles Came Full Circle to serve Boston families

For many years, I photographed weddings throughout New England. Before Alternate Angles became known in greater Boston and Norwood for newborn portraits, weddings were a huge part of my work.

I love wedding photography:  the energy, the emotion, the pace, and the privilege of being trusted with one of the most important days in a family’s life. Weddings taught me how to anticipate the moment before it happened. They taught me how to walk into almost any room, home, church, hotel ballroom, backyard or beach and find the light — or create it. They taught me how to work quickly, calmly and creatively, whether I was photographing in bright summer sun, a dark reception space, a rainy Newport afternoon or a packed Boston dance floor.

Those skills never left me. In fact, I use them every time I photograph a newborn in a client’s home, a toddler who will not sit still, or a family portrait session outdoors in changing light. Wedding photography gave me the technical foundation and the confidence to make beautiful images in real-life situations, not just perfect studio conditions.

So why did I make the transition?

The honest answer is life balance.

After nearly 20 years of photographing weddings, I began looking at my own children and realizing how quickly the years were passing. The number of summers when they would still be home, still want to spend weekends with me, still be children, was getting smaller. Wedding photography meant many long weekends away from my own family. I missed birthdays, cookouts, beach days and ordinary Saturdays — the kind of moments that do not seem rare until they are gone.

In 2017, I made the decision to step away from weddings and focus completely on portraits, especially newborns, babies, children and families. In many ways, it was a full-circle move. Photographing children was what first pulled me into photography. Today, specializing in the first year of life feels like returning to the heart of what I always loved most: telling the story of families as they grow.

One of the nicest surprises has been seeing former wedding clients come back when their own families begin. The couples I once photographed walking down the aisle now call me to photograph their newborns, their toddlers and their family milestones. That continuity means the world to me.

While I no longer photograph weddings, I am deeply grateful for those years. They shaped the photographer I am today. Every newborn portrait, every family session and every quiet moment between a parent and child carries something I learned from weddings: patience, anticipation, light, emotion and the understanding that the moments we photograph become more valuable with time.

Below, please enjoy some of my favorite wedding images from the years.
